How to deal with negative people

Most at times no matter how much of an optimist person you are, you get to realize that you are surrounded by negative people.  We all have those friends or colleagues who suck positivity out of us.  Unfortunately, we have to deal with them and their negative energy as long as we live.

Negativity has a strong effect on our personal well-being and this is due to the fact that they are very pessimistic. They can be real downers in any conversation, being around them can be mentally and psychologically draining.

I have dealt with a fair portion of them in my life, and dealing with them was never easy. It took me a long time to realize I needed to take action and get rid of these people. I became a victim of circumstance.  Instead of using my time and energy to focus on my life and achieving my goals I was lost in the midst of pessimism.

At some point, I became so stagnated at certain areas of my life that were meant to move forward. It took me so much self-reflection to realize that I was in a very dark place at that time.

On my own, I had to learn to get rid of negative people. First, I had to assume the responsibility of myself, my thoughts and my feelings. My first step was built on the words of Carl Jung “everything that irritates you about others can lead us to the understanding of ourselves.”

I also learned to set my boundaries with people. I believe this is one of the most amazing steps I took. I had to learn to walk away from the unenthusiastic company and feel less pressured from being around them. The only way I was able to achieve this was by cutting off every form of communication I had with them.  This is because we can hardly control the negative impact these people have on us.

According to Christine Baranski “The older I get the more I try not waste my time on negative energy.” With this, I learned how to ignore negative comment and information. Wasting valuable time and energy on negativity causes emotional stress and breakdown.

Most importantly, I learned to build a network of positive friends. Your happiness and well-being are very important to let negative opinion pull you down or affect you in any way.  Protect your positive space.
